Higher Ground Academy

by Saint Paul civic leader Bill Wilson, Higher Ground Academy opened its doors
on September 7, 1999. The school was opened to kindergarten through 9th grade
students, with an additional grade level added each successive year until the
full K-12 complement was achieved in the 2002-2003 school year.
Serving
primarily African American and African immigrant communities, today its K-12
program has over 650 students and has some of the the highest test scores for
minority students in the state. The school received high rankings in CSP’s
‘Closing the Gap’ schools and the Star Tribune’s ‘Beating the Odds’ and
‘Biggest Gains’ listings (links).

Core Strengths
Along
with Bill Wilson, Dr. Samual Yigsaw, the school’s academic leader, have put
together a very, solid program focused on strong ongoing teacher monitoring,
training and continual feedback based on a rigorous data driven culture. In addition to the state’s MCA-II test
scores, Higher Ground utilizes NWEA-MAP assessment test three times a year to
monitor student academic growth and drive instruction.
