Lighthouse Academy of Nations

Overview

When Farhan Hussein took over the leadership of Lighthouse Academy of Nations in 2008, a 9-12 high school, the school was deep in debt and academic results were very poor, having not met AYP for several years in a row.  Farhan implemented an organizational and academic  ‘turn around’ program that has been most impressive.

Farhan ended his first year with a strong fund balance and the school got out of the state Statutory Operating Debt (SOD). In his second year, the school went from 0% proficient in MCA-II state tests to ‘The Biggest Gains of 2010” (link to Star Trib) of any other public school – charter or district -- in the state.  This school year, 2010-2011, eight new teachers were hired (including several Teach for America Corps Members) and the academic focus has continued to be refined.. The school now calls itself a Multi-Cultural College Prep school.

Core Strengths

Lighthouse Academy of Nations is for high school students, ages 13 to 21.  It’s strengths include:

  • small class sizes, less than 15 to 20 students, allowing teachers to focus on the individual and strengthen his/her skills needed for college.
  • an extended day schedule to help bridge the educational gap and improve a student’s chance to attend the college or university of their choice.
  • a staff that speaks many languages including Arabic, English, Ewe, French, German, Hmong, Spanish, Somali, and Thai.
  • A focus on helping students pursue secondary education and/or success in today’s workforce. The school facilitates academic decision-making, curriculum information, interpretation of policies and procedures, and assessment of student interests as well as financial aid applications and scholarships using the latest resources to aid in career exploration. Resources include online services, software programs, workshops, guest speakers, and college visits.
