St. Paul Conservatory for the Performing Arts

Overview

Founded in 2005 with assistance from the Mayor’s office and a groundswell of Saint Paul civic groups, Terry Tofte, a former district superintendent, launched The Saint Paul Conservatory for Performing Artists (SPCPA), a public charter high school.  The school’s mission is to provide a world-class professionally guided academic and artistic environment to train aspiring pre-professional performing artists in the areas of instrument and vocal music, theater and dance.

With strong leadership, the program has rapidly grown and developed in its first years and today the school is at full capacity.  Graduates from the program are being accepted into some of the nation’s top music, theater and dance university programs.

Core Strengths

SPCPA is located in the historic Landmark Center and partners with the Ordway Center for Performing Arts (SCPCA’s Authorizer), The Saint Paul RiverCentre and several other downtown Saint Paul theater venues . Add to this unique multiple-venue, the high-caliber music, theater and dance teaching staff, SPCPA has developed into a truly unique and world-class learning opportunity for young performing artist.

Even in traditional MCA-II assessments tests, SPCPA students have scored some of the highest English test scores in the state.  The school has recently put a greater focus on Math for all students and this effort paid off:  the 2010 MCA-II Math scores increased  by 25% over 2009.
